“A school research project, yes”, Rowan answered - perhaps too eagerly. “In our school, it is mandatory for every student to do a research project in groups in their last years. We chose to do our project about fanfiction.”
“See, we contacted you, because our research question is: “To which extent can fanfiction be considered to be a literary movement?”, and a couple of years ago, you wrote this book…”
“You mean Fic?”
“Yes! Exactly, that one.”
It seemed like the professor was about to ask another question, but she was - rudely - interrupted by a black-and-white demonic blur, which, upon closer inspection, turned out to be a small dog.
The sight of the worried professor desperately trying to contain her - apparently sick - puppy in her arms while also balancing her laptop on her legs and somehow not spilling her coffee reminded Rowan of the interview they were supposed to be conducting.

“Per Haskell gave him the attic to humiliate him, making him climb the stairs so often,” Jesper told her once, as they watched a Razorgull messenger reach their landing, puffing for breath before starting the last flight of stairs to Kaz’s attic rooms. Jesper dealt another hand as he spoke, the gesture automatic; he was teaching her Zemeni card games in their free time. “So of course, Kaz had to turn it into the Dregs’ center of operations and make all of us climb the damn stairs right along with him.”
Though she wasn’t paid to do it, she gathered secrets about Kaz anyway. It was becoming a habit: anywhere she went, from the chip vendors to the roofs of chapels, she gathered.

“Mhmm. Don’t sleep a lot,” Kaz studied her face. “It looks like you don’t, either,”
Inej shrugged. Did it matter if she wasn’t able to sleep? “Not really,”
“Want some?” Kaz offered the thermos to her.
“I’ve never had coffee,” Inej said hesitantly, but she took the thermos anyway.Series
