Summary
Deep down, Mulder knew that if they were entangled even more tightly, he’d eventually become more irritated than aroused by her voice. He’d hear it in reference to uneaten vegetables and unopened mail and unfolded laundry. That holy righteous rage of hers, that unquenchable fire that roared at him to be better and do better and live better, would illuminate not just his career but the entirety of his being. And he doubted he could live up to that scrutiny. After almost almost getting her killed any number of times, somehow Mulder knew that asking her to forgive more mundane betrayals would be the final straw. Abduction? Possession? Cannibalism? All in a day’s work. Leaving sunflower shells everywhere? That was a bridge too far. It was better, safer, sweeter, kinder to love each other the way they did. To keep some mystery alive, and with it her steadfast belief in him. Delaying consummation was delaying his inevitable disappointment of her.

Summary
Eddie Van Blundht, or rather, the tree that fell in the forest that both he and Scully had been pretending they hadn't heard... but it had definitely made a noise. A loud one. One that left a deafening echo, really, that lingered in the air between all of their interactions since. Some unspeakable sonic boom that made Mulder's ears ring so bad it had been keeping him up at night. He watched her now, across the office, the slant of the late afternoon light cutting her clean through the middle, only to be seemingly absorbed into its own wound. Scully wouldn't use a word like cleave to describe it, but it's how it looked to Mulder -- how it felt.

Summary
There was something about sitting in the dark with someone, in the cab of a sedan at night. Two beings, side by side, collected together in shadow. Dim light cast from a half-moon or a distant streetlamp scarcely catching silhouettes, car parked determinedly out of sight, engine cold. There was something anonymous about it. Clandestine. As if time, and usual protective walls, ceased to exist.
Follow Mulder and Scully, as their relationship unfolds then folds back in on itself, as they sit together - over many seasons of stakeouts.
What can happen in the dark?
Written for the 2021 X-Files SMUT exchange. Yes, it's that kind of story, so buckle up.

If someone wrote "Time Travel for Dummies," the guidebook should include a chapter titled “Love as a Form of Self-flagellation.” Or “She’s Your Touchstone, You’re a Stranger.” Mulder’s ancient files documented time travel, parallel universes, multiverses, and wormholes. Back in the day, he’d been a regular G-man with a hot partner, a hazy job description, and a plan to thwart an alien invasion. Then the world ended. Scully vanished. And none of his X-files offered any guidance on romance in a time of pleated pants and shoulder pads.
