    We should have had a nice, uneventful survey after we outmaneuvered the Corporate lawyers and avoided contracting a SecUnit for this endeavor. But then the haunting started.

    From what I understand, the human brain is basically an electrical meatball. A very sophisticated meatball, to be sure, but still – organic.

    That organic human neural tissue – unless very carefully cultivated under very specific laboratory parameters – doesn’t always play nicely with the non-organic bits. And even then, see example: me.

    That wasn’t even including the fact that Gurathin had received his augments in the Corporation Rim and company equipment – see again: me – wasn’t exactly premium quality.

    Irminhart had thought to keep the match quick and relatively painless--to allow this man to escape with most of his dignity intact. One could not speak to a prince of Rothier in such a manner and not expect to pay some price. Only as time dragged on, did Irminhart see what he had missed in passing. The man sparred with the perfect stiff-rod posture of a man trained in the army. A man who had marched a thousand times, his commander yelling at him for even the slightest imperfection.

    It shouldn't have mattered. It shouldn't have made a difference. Irminhart was the best swordsman of his generation. And yet...
