It was the blinking she noticed first, as it grew just a touch more rapid–more conscious. Carlos’ eyelashes fluttered with the faintest wisping flicker of recognition. Jill was certain that if she too had blinked, she would’ve missed it entirely.
“There you are,” she murmured, exhaustion just now beginning to slither down her arms, “that’s it, come on… Keep looking at me, focus. Fight it. Fight it, Carlos Oliveira.”
Then she heard it–the sound being too faint and strained to even be considered a whisper. It was a breath at best.
