Kiryu tried to shut the conversation down just as Ichiban suggested, “why not Majima Goro? You were close with him, right?”
A shiver involuntarily tore through Kiryu’s body at the name, up his spine and shot through the nerves in his arms and legs. Ichiban noticed.
“Oh. A no-go?”
After the events of the Dissolution, Kiryu loses touch with his friends - one of which he had been pining after for about 20 years. But life, as it was, always had different plans for Kiryu. He has no choice but to take it in stride. Emotionally confusing events ensue.

Summary
It must have been Karen who’s summoned him, Matt thinks, although how she’s gotten in touch with Frank and convinced him to help, he’s got no idea. Frank did always have a soft spot for her — she was the only one he’d talk to, during the trial, and he’d saved her from those thugs shooting up her apartment (although Matt’s still not entirely sure what happened after that— Karen had always been a bit vague about Frank “kidnapping” her from police custody).
He knows Karen and Frank were in touch while Matt was recuperating after Midland Circle— but Karen had also been light on the details of Frank’s involvement when she’d been used as a human shield by that suicide bomber..
Now that Matt thinks about it, there’s a lot of stuff Karen’s been vague about when it comes to Frank.

Summary
Frank is a logger living a life of isolation up in the mountains of Seward, Alaska. Running from his grief, he has retreated so far into himself that he couldn't find his way out if he tried.
Karen is an author who has rented the cabin down the way from Frank’s in order to get away and write her next novel in solitude. Having suffered severe writer's block, she's hoping that the quietude of Alaska will help her find her muse.
After years of falling apart, the universe has decided that it's time for these two to fall together.
"Frank watched her, with her head thrown back, fascinated. It had been a minute since he’d made anyone other than Curtis and David laugh. He was surprised at how easily it was coming to him—how relatively effortless it was to talk to Karen. He supposed, in part, it was because of her profession; he was sure that someone who spent most of their time studying people and writing dialogue would be a great conversationalist. But it also felt like he was dusting off the parts of him that used to be really good at this—the parts of him that were capable of making Maria laugh; were comfortable joking around. The parts that, while creaky and unused, were still there."
