    Summary

    Oh, alright, cool.

    Cool, cool, cool. Neat.

That is a photograph of Eddie Diaz's dick.

It's just there. On the screen. In his hand. In high resolution. His best friend’s dick is in his hand. Well, wait — the photo. The photo of the penis is in his hand. Eddie’s dick isn’t in his hand. That would be absurd.

It’s just a penis. Buck has one of those.

So does Eddie, apparently and it’s… Buck has seen it, absorbed it, and every thought he's ever had has been replaced by a high-pitched tone and the image in front of him, which is — and this is the last coherent observation he'll produce for the foreseeable future —

    Big.

    Genuinely, impressively big.

Buck closes out of the photo and locks the phone so hard he's surprised it doesn't crack in half.

    "Maddie say anything?" Eddie asks.

"Yep," Buck squeaks. Like a mouse. A giant, shocked mouse that has just seen its best friend’s erect dick.

    "You okay?"

"Great. Y-yep. So great. I-I'm just really— the sunset was really— it's very— yep."

    "It’s yep?"

    "Uh-huh. Very yep."

    Or,
Stumbling upon your straight best friends' nudes is fine. Buck is fine. Everything is fine.

    Summary

Buck tries to commit the frame to memory, wills himself not to forget the important details—Eddie on his knees in front of him, his nails seeking purchase along Buck's thighs as he drinks him down, his drawn-out gasps when Buck returns the favor.

After, when Buck reaches out for quiet confirmation in the dark, asks him, "Good?"

Eddie tells him, earnest and hard-won, "Everything is good with you," and Buck can bask in the illusion of a world where he almost believes it.

Buck is trying to leave the past where it belongs. Then he wins an all-expenses-paid trip to Italy, convinces Eddie to join him, and falls headfirst into (not so) casual sex with his best friend.

    Summary

"Leave it," Eddie says, his voice pulled taut like a wire about to snap, tight enough to hum.

Buck looks at him, and Eddie’s whole body has gone so rigid he looks carved from stone, but Buck will ruminate on that later. But he can't exactly leave his phone under the seat for the next eight hundred miles, it's got his whole life on it, every stupid photo he's ever taken of Christopher and Eddie and Eddie and Christopher and, embarrassingly, just Eddie, so many just-Eddies, an entire hidden album of candids he'll never admit to because they constitute evidence of something he's been pretending he doesn't feel.

"I can't leave it, it's my phone. It's got— hold on, I think it slid under your seat."

    “Buck, don’t.”

It’s as if Eddie doesn’t even know him, because Buck has never once heard the word don’t and responded with anything resembling obedience. So now he’s stretching across the center console with one hand braced on Eddie’s thigh for leverage, the other reaching blindly into the dark gap beneath the driver’s seat, and he’s aware on some level that his positioning is— that he’s essentially— that his head is—

    He’s in Eddie’s lap.

    Or,
    What's a little road-head between friends?

    Summary

Apparently everyone in New Mexico has a better gaydar than the rest of the continental United States combined, because Eddie's not sure so many people have ever clocked him in such a brief span of time ever. Let alone so cruelly.

There's a lot of things about himself that Eddie's sort of always known, but kept pushed away in a faraway corner of his mind. Somewhere safe, where it's out of reach. He could live a life entire pretending it isn't there, and if it rots away inside of him until it's ugly and broken, well. Even more reason to never look.

Unfortunately. His best friend in the whole world keeps making him look.

or: Buck and Eddie stop at a motel halfway through their ride back home. Eddie thinks a lot. Then he says a lot, too.

    Summary

“Well,” Buck says, as Eddie slams the hood of the car shut on the smoking engine, some twenty minutes after crossing the border into Arizona. “That’s unfortunate.”

Or: one ambulance ride, hospital visit, partial drive, tow truck, shitty motel with one bed, and weird comment from a sheriff later, BuckandEddie finally find their last piece and make it home.
