Before she could really stop herself her arms were around Jack, pulling him into a kiss more passionate that she’d have allowed herself had she been sober. The noise of the rooftop faded into the background as his hands settled on her waist.
But as the fireworks exploded in the sky above, the kiss felt more like an escape than a celebration. She pulled back slightly, scanning his face and looking almost disappointed.
“Happy New Year,” Jack whispered, giving her that charming smile that almost made her forget why she’d ever consider leaving.
Claire forced a smile in return, her hands dropping to his chest. “Happy New Year.”
She tried to soak it in, to ground herself in the moment, but her gaze betrayed her. It drifted again— inevitably, stupidly— to Leon.

Claire had given up the idea of motherhood long ago, least of all with a man who on his best day just managed to numb the pain. Life, however, had an unexpected way of granting wishes. His touch slips down her neck, her collarbone, to that darkening mark on her breast, textured by disease, as if her skin is necrotizing. Sherry’s pretty sure it isn’t, the cells aren’t dead, just…infected. The look of it is horrific, though. He’s tried to scrub it off, to pick at it, pull the skin away like it’s just a covering, a bandage, a layer that’s marring the skin. It bleeds but it never heals.
Sherry told him to stop doing it, that it could possibly make it worse, make the infection spread faster. She isn’t sure, but there’s the possibility. So he’s tried to stop picking at it. Tried to stop wanting to scrape steel wool over his neck. He’s trying, he’s trying.

Leon has been through so much in his life, but there's something about this virus slowly killing him and people he loves that terrorizes his thoughts, to the point that he doesn't know how to focus on the present instead of a potential impending death. Claire is there for him, but even she's more scared than she lets on.
Takes place before Requiem but after signs of the infection have started showing up.
The title is from the song Scars by Boy Epic.
