Summary
Mack wasn’t waking up.
“Hey—hey, stop,” Will said automatically, scrambling out of his bed.
He grabbed Mack’s shoulder.
It felt like grabbing a statue.
Completely stiff.

Summary
“If you apologize for crying I'm going to smack you, dude,” Will says, evenly. “We’ve been over this. No apologising for being a human with emotions and not some sort of hockey robot.”
“But I’m difficult.” It comes out as a bit petulant and it’s so like Mack to be asking for comfort and pushing Will away at the same time.
“So are most brilliant people.” Will shrugs. “I like you the way you are. Besides, I talk enough for the both of us.”
Praise tends to bounce right off Mack. At first Will thought he was just humble and was surprised – God knows if Leno had been first overall in the draft Will would still be hearing about it by the time he’s 30 – but now he knows better. Mack can’t take a compliment to save his damn life and it’s less of a “I’m such a down to earth dude” thing, more of a “I think you should talk to a therapist about this” thing.

Summary
Mack feels sickness bubble at the back of his throat, clawing and burning, acidic spit tweaking frothily at the corners of his mouth. He doesn’t move, though. Just stays in place, watching Will pace back and forth, hands running through his hair over and over like he’s doing laps on the ice. His lips are moving, words streaming forth, but Mack’s not registering them over the rush of blood lighting up his head.
