Summary
The first time Mat and Rand ended up in bed together was two weeks after the fall of the Stone of Tear and it was, without a doubt, Perrin's fault.
The trouble was that Mat's plan had worked — drinking with Rand and reminding him of the Two Rivers had done him some good, had lightened the shadows around his eyes, and made him look more like Rand and less like the Dragon Reborn. So it made sense to do it again.
And Perrin kept not showing up. He always had a good excuse, afterwards, but Mat figured he knew the real reason. Perrin had fallen in love, and he found his ladylove infinitely more interesting than he found his old friends from back home.
So Mat and Rand kept falling into bed together. It seemed easier each time it happened, less time passing between the first drink of the night and the first kiss. It was good practice anyway, he told Rand one of those early nights, which had made Rand laugh — actually laugh, not just barely smile — and kiss him.

When Elayne and Nynaeve request that Mat move into the palace to help them search for the Bowl of the Winds, he comes up with a plan to ward off Queen Tylin's pursuit of him - a fake engagement with Elayne.
"Nynaeve, I'd like a moment alone with Master Cauthon," Elayne said, not taking her eyes off Mat's face. He would move into the palace, no matter what she had to do to make it happen.
"If you want so badly to waste your time," Nynaeve muttered, storming off. Mat winced when she slammed the door behind herself.
"Sheep's swallop," Mat muttered. "Bleeding bollocks, does everything that woman does have to be so loud?"
Bleeding… what? What were…
"Master Cauthon," Elayne said. She cast about for a place to sit. There was nowhere. He was on the bed, of course, so that wasn't an option. The one chair in the room was piled with nonsense and topped off with that ridiculous hat. "We are both reasonable people." Elayne forgave herself for the lie. "Surely we can come to an arrangement."
