Summary
Life, as Dani Clayton sees it, is full of darkness. Little darknesses, like a mother who draws away even as she continues to draw breath, and big darknesses, like loss that comes out of absolutely nowhere, and all the variations in between. Life is unpredictable. It’s ugly. It’s cruel.
Life also grants the laughter of small children, and wonderful dinners prepared by good friends, and Jamie’s hand in hers.
There is, certainly, no shortage of lights in the dark.

Turns out the administrative meeting is in the gym and it’s interactive—a rally just for them before the students come back, in fact—and so as soon as she overhears that, she bolts.
She’s sitting in the girl’s locker room on a bench, smoking, when the double doors open with a creak, the sound of heels on concrete complimented by the rattle of keys and a quiet thank god, and what Therese knows is the rasping click of a lighter.

Summary
The cafe is small and dim, lit mostly by candles on the scattered tables. There is a small raised platform that the proprietors call a stage, but Delphine thinks this is much too generous. Really it is little more than planks of wood painted black and stacked side by side so that they add a few inches to the performers, but that will serve her purposes.
