Wendy Kent expected a lot of things from her job. Or rather, both her jobs. She was always prepared for every emergency. Every contingency. Every single possible event.
What she was not prepared for was billionaire Irene Wayne lying on her desk in front of her, legs parted, collar undone, and clearly expressing interest. All after Wendy had lost a night of sleep wondering if Gotham was being overtaken by a violent supernatural conspiracy that even her alter ego as Superman couldn’t handle and was very very stressed about it.
Irene smirked, just a few inches away to touch, impossibly tantalising. “Anything on your mind, Wendy?” she asked, voice gravelly.
Oh yeah. There was a lot.

Summary
With all his other senses dulled, the smell of old paper is overwhelming. Benzaldehyde, vanillin, and toluene from the chemical degradation of print ink and wood pulp, if Viktor recalls correctly. Vaguely almond, vanilla and floral like, thanks to a mixture of volatile organic compounds. There are probably decades worth of old research in the stacks around him, all worn down by the passage of time, probably chock full of ideas researchers hoped would be the next big idea, now rotting away into obscurity.
Viktor tries very hard not to read too much into that.
Or: Viktor was only trying to nurse his unrequinted crush and dodge security in the comfort of the old lab. He didn't realise Jayce was trying to do the exact same thing.

Summary
The scientific method, the golden rule of innovation, stated that you had to test your principle a few hundred times before your hypothesis could be accepted as fact. You had to fail in a myriad of ways before anything resembling the first breakthrough. It was simply the risk of invention. Nowhere did it account for the easy, simple way Jayce and Viktor slotted together on the first try, the transformation of how their collective years and heated discussions, and even the rare moment of heartbreak, could smoothen into a single golden thread of enduring.
Nowhere could it fathom the way Jayce looked at him, flushed and excited after a night out and said “V, let’s find a place together”
Or: Jayce overthinks his adult autism diagnosis, and Viktor overthinks moving in together. Between the two of them, they rediscover what it means for someone who know you wholly, and love you anyway

Then he took a deep breath and he changed. He ironed out every fold in his posture and his face until he looked like Superman again. His shoulders were broad, his gaze was confident, and his smile showed no sign of embarrassment or fear.
It’s genuinely uncomfortable to watch.
Especially since Bruce knows that change. He’s seen it in the mirror before entering parties or nightclubs. He’s always referred to it, internally, as 'putting on my better face.' The façade is his least favourite part of the day, ranking just below 'getting punched by supervillains.'
The idea that Superman is just Kal's better face, that would explain a lot.
It would also mean Bruce isn't alone.
