A humid summer evening. Ren’s ugly polo shirt is stuck to his back with sweat. His hair is lank. Akechi observes him shifting subtly in his chair at their usual café, trying to escape the discomfort, and decides the spectacle pleases him. It’s perhaps an unfair advantage that Akechi himself never feels the heat too badly. And a Ren who is already uncomfortable is a Ren who’s vulnerable, which is why Akechi picks that moment to say, “Do you mind if I ask a personal question?”

Summary
A human cry from behind Goro catches him by surprise. Akira.
Goro whirls around just as the heel of the shadow’s scythe collides with Akira’s head. Akira staggers backward. The blade strikes again, tearing through Akira’s arm. Blood sprays onto the ground as Akira collapses to one knee.
Time freezes. Akira glares up at the Macabre poised to reap with a face draining of color. Blood streams down from Akira’s hairline, glazing his white mask crimson. His arm is a landscape; blood runs from rounded peaks of muscle, like a river flowing downhill from the mountains, pouring into his curled palm, and trickling into the ocean of mist he kneels in.
Goro sees red. He has no options left.

Summary
The trees in the station square are full with their lush, green foliage, rustling quietly amidst the noise of the city and soaking up the afternoon sun before it sinks beneath the tops of the skyscrapers. A slanting ray catches in Goro's eyes and lights them up in a deep, resplendent shade of red, wrenching Ren's heart back to a summer day three years ago. Not long after they'd first met, they had stood in this exact square, drenched in sunlight and the undeniable excitement of their new, fledgling bond, unaware that it was about to change both their lives forever.
Looking at Goro now, that sun-warm gaze pouring down into the depths of Ren's soul, he wouldn't change a single thing about the way it had all happened.
