On missions like this, it felt like ghostbusting too. The planet-owner who’d sent them down here hadn’t mentioned just how derelict this region was, all parametric architecture creaking and bending loudly in the silence as dust slowly wore at it. Her torch illuminated a tiny beam of white light that swept over grey metal and abandoned furnishings and finally back down to the puddle at her feet.
Crouching down, Squiddo slid their handheld microscope out of their belt and got to work adjusting the magnification. They didn’t exactly have a degree in astrobiology, but enough work in the field made them pretty good at figuring out what they were looking for — and these vibrating little cells definitely seemed promising.
“Good news, Zam,” she said, the sound of her voice echoing oddly as it hit her helmet and found nothing beyond. “We’ve got some kind of eukaryotes here, and they really like my boots.”

Summary
With months of rest behind her, Zam is sufficiently aware of how out of practice she is. Fighting feels freeing, a clear sign that she isn’t yet used to it, and the wind flicks her freshly shorn hair into her eyes at every turn.
She’s not unprepared. She didn’t approach this meeting thinking it would turn into anything but a battle, but she’s also well aware that it is a losing one. Then again, who would she be if she didn’t try?
The unexpected factor here is that she’s not alone.

It was honestly terrifying, in retrospect, because Mapicc barely even knew Minute when it happened. Given everything he knew about the world, it was stupid to get attached to someone before getting to know them, especially when their first moves were those of violence. He’d been taught that over and over, advice embedded firmly in the survival guide in his head.
But all of that didn’t appear to matter when it came down to it. He met Minute, and something just — flipped into place.
