Above Wylan’s bony left ankle, metal gleams: a heavy iron manacle, welded to a long chain of links that snake behind him, clattering on the floor as he moves.
Jesper watches it, mouth open as everything he’d assumed shatters and comes back together in a new shape. “You’re a prisoner!” he blurts out.
Wylan twists sharply to look at him, face creased in a familiar aggravated scowl. “Are you an idiot?” he demands. “The locked door wasn’t a clue?”
There are new weapons appearing in the Barrel. Kaz sends Jesper undercover to find out where they’re coming from. Jesper finds something else entirely.

They lie on the edge of the roof, watching the guests arrive at the Ice Court, dignitaries, performers, the workers from the West Stave houses. In the midst of the glittering crowds one group stands out, a blot of darkness among the gaudy frocks and suits.

Summary
Something grabs at the back of his coat and suddenly he’s flying, pulled up out of the water to land in a sodden heap in a small rowboat, the world’s most ungainly fish. He scrabbles away from his rescuer, expecting to feel pain again, his father’s men back to finish the job. Instead there’s a boy with light brown skin and grey eyes, the most handsome face he’s ever seen.
As he casts around, confused, he finds himself looking into a pair of boundless dark eyes, a pale face cold as canal water. “Wylan Van Eck?” the man asks, his voice like rust, his tone as formal as if they’re being introduced at some banquet. Wylan is too startled to do anything but nod.

Summary
The entry scar no longer ached or itched, but Tehuty-et liked to remind Seshet of where she came from; the gesture, a hand cupping the back of the neck, massaging the raised line of flesh with agitated fingers, had become one of Seshet’s trademark habits, one that her consort, Thoth, despised. As Seshet’s fingers played briefly across the scar that didn’t really ache, there was enough of Tehuty-et left in the spaces between to feel a pale sort of satisfaction.
