“You’re gonna catch something,” the Farmer says, stepping through the snow-slick grass. His boots crunch where the ground’s still half-frozen. “Or get pneumonia. Again.”
Alex doesn’t look at him. Just stares off toward the field like there’s a game still going he hasn’t lost yet.
“I’ve had worse,” he says. “You forget I used to train out here in hail.” He’s half-smiling, but his mouth doesn’t quite curl up in the vibrant way the Farmer is used to.
