Yelena nods. “It’s okay. Just breathe.”
And she waits.
She draws little shapes on his knee with her thumb, absentmindedly, reaches out and drags her fingers through his hair behind his ear, whispers a sorry when he flinches. Yelena hushes him softly, hums, picks a loose thread off his shoulder.
And she waits. Until the sobs turn to sniffs, until his frame relaxes, until he takes a long, deep breath and turns his tear tattooed face to hers.
And she smiles.

He was playing with the end of his sleeves, feeling Yelena scooting closer to him. She put a hand on his shoulder, before sliding it to wrap her arm around his back. She rested her head on his shoulder, squeezing her arms around him. She stared at the screensaver on the tv, feeling the side of his head resting on top of hers.
“You want to talk about it?” she asked.
“Not yet,” he mumbled.

Gently, she takes Bob’s hand in hers from where it rests at his side. He melts into the contact, two hands becoming one. She guides their bonded hands to the soft skin just under her belly. His fingers ghost over the raised, white scar cutting across it. His hand is rougher than she had expected, hardened by calluses. A reminder that he’s lived an entire life before he became hers, one that she’s only just begun to uncover.

So, Bob figures out pretty fast that when he has skin-on-skin physical contact with anyone, intentional or not, it tends to send that person into vivid and often traumatic flashbacks. And Bob, being Bob, doesn’t want to cause pain that he could possibly prevent. So he stops all physical contact whatsoever.
The team takes issue with this.

Bob looks at her. She's looking at him like she always does, patient and kind, and Bob feels both guilt and gratefulness for her. She's never pushed him too hard. She's always been content to wait for as long as he needs, helping him with even the tiniest things.
Bob can do this for her. He can sit up.
He takes a breath to gather his strength, before he brings his hands beside him and levers himself up into a sitting position.
Yelena beams at him and Bob thinks that she's worth it.
