Images of being at Noctis' apartment back in Insomnia were brought to the forefront of Ignis’ mind, when he'd wake the prince up early to get to school or to a council meeting at the Citadel. If not for their surroundings; the desert around them, the sound of wildlife a safe distance from the haven, the hot plate substituting as a stovetop, the lawn chairs a far cry from the opulent sofas and armchairs; he really could have imagined being back in the Crown City. But as Noctis’ head pressed against his back and his breathing started to slow, the connection between a house and a home felt arbitrary.

Summary
As they drove, a wooden fence previously separating asphalt from grass now standing as a barrier between asphalt and sand, the ocean eventually came into view. It reflected a sharp turquoise with specks and slivers of white. Currents interrupted and tumbled over each other, a relay to brush against the shoreline first before they get pulled back into the expanse to wait their turn to resurface.

He had stared at it when he first moved in with his grandmother, had always watched it from the kitchen window every morning as if waiting for something to emerge from the forest. An invitation, he hoped. But years of staying in a tiny home in a tiny village where he knew everyone and everyone knew him made his legs ache with a weariness unlike the kind he felt when he would be the one in charge of pulling a cart loaded with lumber to the drop-off point at the train station. But when he tried to attach a word to that feeling he couldn’t think of any other way to describe it than “tired.”

Summary
To say it had been a shock to see Phoenix across the courtroom from him that first time would be an understatement. Phoenix was an old, warm memory gone cold with time and von Karma’s influence. But facing that nervous smile, that brightly determined gaze, had cleared some of the fog. It had forced him to remember that sunlight existed. To realize it lived in too-kind eyes.
The gaze Phoenix fixes him with now is as dark and unsettling as a day that begins without dawn.
While Miles has been making his slow way to spring, Phoenix has fallen into winter.

“Uh, yeah, because...” How are you supposed to tell someone that you don’t think they’re happy anymore? That you're in love with them and that they only see you as a casual thing? Mu Qing was stressed and he never let Feng Xin meet his mom and he never moved in. Mu Qing hated when Feng Xin said I love you, actually; he’d get tense and change the subject. The one time Feng Xin had tried to talk about marriage, he’d said Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
“Fine.”

“Four – or five centuries ago?” Feng Xin guesses and turns to Mu Qing to back him up.
“672 years, 8 months and 25 days.”
“Holy shit!” Feng Xin yells. “Has it been that long?”
“Yes.”
Feng Xin cups his hands around Mu Qing’s small face and gently runs his thumbs across his high cheekbones. “You haven’t aged a day.”
“And you,” Mu Qing answers, with a teasing lilt to his voice, “haven’t grown up at all.”

Summary
Herein lies the problem: Feng Xin has horrible, ridiculous, extremely inconvenient and unrequited feelings for Mu Qing. He doesn’t know when he’d started thinking of Mu Qing’s eyeroll as endearing rather than extremely fucking irritating, he doesn’t know when he’d started thinking of him when the sun sets, an idle wish for his company on his tongue, he doesn’t know when he’d started buying cherry bread to bring home because he knows Mu Qing likes it.
Herein lies a second problem: Mu Qing has abhorrent, incorrigible, inconvenient, and extremely unrequited feelings for Feng Xin. He fell for him in high school, in a June afternoon, after a particularly nasty fight that ended in avoidance for weeks. Feng Xin had brought him cherries, hand picked with the effort Feng Xin only puts into things he cares about, an apology stuttered out of a shaking voice, a plea to stay.
He’s been annoyingly, unfortunately in love with him ever since.or, Mu Qing and Feng Xin fall in love on a beach.
