Summary
Buck’s expression crumples. “They thought we were a couple,” he says. It’s not what Eddie was expecting, and he feels wrong-footed and on the defensive all over again. It had rubbed him wrong for a lot of reasons in the diner, in front of the sheriff, but he could take it from them. He can take it from someone, anyone else, and simmer over it later, but he can let it go, put it out of his mind. But he discovers now he can’t, he can’t, take it from Buck.
Eddie isn’t sure what about it is worse. The fact that Buck wouldn’t have blinked an eye at this before, the nebulous before something went wrong, or that—
If he was brave, he would say, Is it really that awful to you? Am I really that awful?
“Yeah,” he says instead, voice as steady as he can get it, ignoring the deep, terrible feeling in his stomach, “so?”

Summary
“Hey, beautiful,” he says, and Athena’s eyes open. She dreams of his voice most nights, the warm timbre of it right in her ear, the way he’d say her name sometimes just to say it.
“Hey, handsome,” she says back, quiet. “I’m dreaming, aren’t I?”
“Pretty good dream if you ask me,” he says, that little slant of humor in his voice.

Summary
“Maybe you should try casual. Date a friend who would still be your friend after you break up,” Buck says, and in the same breath, without thinking, “Date me.”
He snaps his mouth shut, his entire body flushing with heat. Eddie looks at him for a very, very long second. “You.”
Through the sudden panic, Buck’s mouth goes on autopilot, “No sex, just a few dates, we’ll have an amicable break up. I already know and love Christopher. And anyway, I’m a guy. So, no need to worry about you catching feelings either.”
-
Spoiler alert: it’s not casual. They don’t break up. And they have sex.

Summary
Eddie laughs at him, but he wraps his hand around Buck's soft dick, relishing Buck's sharp inhale at it. "Sensitive?" Eddie asks quietly, squeezing a little to watch Buck squirm.
"Yeah," Buck says, pupils blown wide, breathless and eager as ever. "More?"
"Yeah," Eddie says, cheeks warm, and he ducks down to take Buck into his mouth.

Summary
He grasps at consciousness as he listens to Eddie moving around, the bed dipping close to him. Everything smells familiar here, like them, him and Eddie, and the bit of him that’s still able to think realizes he hasn’t been afraid of falling asleep. That he hasn’t been thinking about waking up in that other place, that he hasn’t wondered if he’s halfway to the grave, if he’s going to end up in that not quite right dream again.
That he knows where he belongs, and he wants to keep it. He wants it, desperately wants it, more than anything he’s ever wanted, and he has it, he’s not going to destroy it, and it’s a relief, knowing that.
-
After getting struck by lightning, Buck’s emotions have been a tidal wave. As always, Eddie’s there to catch him.
Or, Buck and belonging.

The last thing Chris said to Buck was in a text message. You’re so embarrassing. Buck had replied with the emoji with the one big eye and its tongue sticking out.

Summary
Through the dusty glass windows he can see Buck standing near the far wall beneath the harsh fluorescent lights, holding a couple of sodas tucked under one arm and a payphone receiver to his ear with the other.
He must be calling Maddie again, beating the gun the same way Eddie intends to.
But then Buck turns. Just enough that Eddie catches the moment his eyes lift toward the parking lot, toward the place where Eddie is standing beside the car with his own phone pressed to his ear.
The call never connects. The line is busy.

Summary
Buck. Chris imagines the shelf he lives on in his mind, stored close to home and Dad. He thinks he’d need more than one little strip of tape for him. Friend and safe and firefighter and family and- he doesn’t know. He thinks he hasn’t learned the words yet to describe the kind of hurting he feels when he thinks about Buck. Not a bad hurting. Kind of like loneliness, like wanting somebody there, but it happens even when Buck is there. Chris doesn’t know. Dad is on the porch now and he’s holding Buck, different than a hug, in some way Chris also doesn’t know how to describe. Sometimes it feels like Chris doesn’t know anything at all.

Summary
For wishbabies, there’s a difference between want and love. Buck knows being wanted. He doesn’t know being loved. Maybe, between the two of them, they can reach a middle ground. Buck can love her, and Eddie can want her, and that will be enough.
Buck and Eddie end up with a wishbaby. It strikes a nerve, but Buck’s always been good at pretending.

Summary
It’s tucked into the back corner, like it doesn’t want to be found. A dollhouse. Big. Wide. Victorian-style. The front is swung open like a book, revealing nine narrow rooms in various stages of disrepair.
Buck crouches, slow and careful, his fingers brushing the floorboards. The wood is smooth, worn in a way that doesn’t make sense. Like they have been walked on over and over again by feet too small to leave a mark.
He’s still looking when a voice breaks in behind him.
“She comes with a box of blanks.”
-
Or: It was just supposed to be a gift for Jee’s birthday. But then the dollhouse came to life, and one small, fragile version of Eddie chose him, in all the ways the real one never did. (This is part of a collection of standalone stories where the houses are never just houses.)
