Summary
Arlo inhaled another plume of smoke, taking it in deeply, shoulders rising with the motion. Smoke burned faintly in the back of his throat before it settled in his chest. The sensation was heavy, unpleasant, yet grounding. He let it trail out slowly from his lips, tired blue eyes following the smoke as it dispersed into the air.
The night breeze had carried the curling tendrils of grey to the neighbouring balcony.
Faintly, Arlo registered the sound of leaves rustling, and a voice that wasn’t his scoffing in disapproval. He turned, meeting eyes with an elderly woman standing among a small jungle of potted plants. Amber eyes narrowed into a disapproving glare, sharp enough to cut through the fog of outdoor lamps and smoke.
“Do you mind?” She snapped, voice brisk and cutting. “My begonias are choking on that filth.”
Arlo blinked, the cigarette awkwardly suspended between his fingers. “I—uh…”

Lucy was the first to break. “Gosh, I almost ate it,” she muttered before an undignified snort escaped her lips.
Horrified, she slapped both hands over her mouth, her face burning red. But Schroeder, still holding her, let out a snicker. Then another. Until he couldn’t hold back anymore, unable to contain the laughter spilled out at her expense.
Lucy’s mortification deepened. "Shut it! I’ll slug you!" she warned, attempting a swat at his cheek. She tried to appear stern, but the dimples digging craters at the corners of her smile proved her efforts futile. It was sluggish and poorly aimed, and he dodged it with ease, grinning all the while.
"Wonderful, Lucy. That snort was noteworthy.” He teased.
“Oh ha, ha.” She grumbled, “You think you’re sooo clever.”

It started the same way it always did. John walked in, tossed his keys on the counter, and Arlo glanced up. This time, though, their eyes met.
Arlo’s unsure if it’s from the dim lighting, or John was just recovering from his run, but his head lifts, and his eyes are glassy, red-rimmed. Chest rising as he breathed, uneven, ragged—as though it took effort to control. The muscles in his jaw were tense, fists clenched tightly at his sides.
Before he could stop himself, Arlo blurted it out. “Were you.. crying?”
