“I didn’t lie to someone by saying we were dating,” Fabian says carefully. “Because that wouldn’t be a lie.”
Riz’s cheeks turn dark with blood. “Wh—what?”
Fabian studies the strange way that Riz seems instantly flustered. He doesn’t understand it but he does find it charming at the very least and distractingly attractive at most. “Am I not allowed to tell people who my boyfriend is?”

or: A lie that Fabian tells while under the effect of Devil's Honey has him convinced that he's dating Riz Gukgak. Riz decides to go along with the lie in an effort to investigate the mystery, but he surprises himself when real feelings begin to form in the process.

Summary
Fabian pauses to look up at Goldenhoard, stopped in time. The balloon arch behind them is maybe a little trite, but it’s also maybe a little sweet. He’s never been to a school dance before, homeschooled as he was on his father's ship, and a part of him wonders if this is supposed to be a shared experience every high schooler has.
“It’s too bad we aren’t here to actually enjoy prom,” Fabian says. “Didn’t even have the time to dance or anything.”
“Do you… want to dance?” Gorgug asks, hesitantly.
Near the end of freshman year, in the shadow of a dragon paused mid-battle thanks to some miraculous chronomancy, Fabian and Gorgug slow dance at prom.
It still takes the better part of a decade for them to start dating.

Summary
Riz is not well-practiced in love. Really all he knows about romantic love is the butterflies, the distinctly different feeling. And he’s not exactly sure what all of it is supposed to mean or what he’s supposed to want, but he’s young and he’s just met Fabian Seacaster who’s got silvery hair and silvery eyes and is tall and handy with a sword and effortlessly cool and doesn’t appear to want to give Riz the time of day, and all he knows is that he falls, and all he knows there is to fall into is love.
So, for simplicity’s sake, he falls in love.
Fabian, to put it plainly, does not.

It's light, and teasing, but Fabian's hands are around Riz's body and Riz's hands are around Fabian's, and if Fabian can feel how fast Riz's heart is beating, can see the things he's not saying in the lines of his back, then surely Riz is able to do the same with him.
In the semi-light of the late night, so late it turns into early morning, Fabian isn't as afraid of it as he usually is.
Or, Riz dies for the second time and Fabian puts some things into perspective.

No, not the shit with the dragon, of course Fabian helped fight a fucking dragon in his first year of high school. That made perfect sense. Not him killing his father, he was probably always going to do that at some point— let’s be real here, it’s not like the man was ever going to allow himself to die of old age.
No, something had definitely gone horribly wrong, something else, because there was absolutely no logical world in which Fabian Seacaster was sitting on the floor of the Gukgak family apartment, staring at The Ball absolutely demolishing a microwave pizza, and thinking, ‘God, I wish that were me.’----
Something was wrong with Fabian Seacaster, and as his unofficial best friend, Riz was the man on the case.

Summary
He doesn’t say anything before he does it, because he’s not really thinking, hypnotized slightly by the lilt of the ship and the way it makes Fabian’s skin appear molten in the light. Riz puts his dripping quill down and stands up, inadvertently using stealth as he pads across the floor to stand directly behind Fabian. His face comes up to the middle of Fabian’s shoulder blades, the same space he occupied all those years ago, and this feels so familiar, so right deep in Riz’s chest, that he just raises his hands and presses his fingers over the first line of unknown, rigid skin.
Years have passed and scars have accumulated, but some things stay the same.

Fig presented the contract with a flourish. “Alright! Everybody sign the fancy contract!” She passed the paper and pencil down. “Fabian and Riz must convincingly fake-date for one month without revealing that it’s fake or bailing out of the challenge. Then, they will dramatically break up. If they can successfully do this, Adaine, Gorgug, Kristen and I will receive our punishments. If they don’t, they get their punishments.”
“I can’t believe I’m getting roped into this somehow,” Riz said as he put his signature in. “I don’t know how I got to this point in my life and I want to know how to stop it from ever happening again.”
After a series of escalating events, Fabian and Riz find themselves in a bet with the other Bad Kids to prove they can convince the school they're dating for a month. It's stupid, childish, and a lot of fun. Riz is freshly out of a sexuality crisis and does not need another one, thank you very much. And Fabian is fascinated by the whole thing, but he's one hundred percent, extremely aware that the fake relationship is just that: fake. Clearly, nothing can go wrong.
