Buck’s head tilts on its axis, in a manner that would be almost harrowing if it weren’t his familiar, ludicrously handsome face. “That’s what?”
“Stupid,” Eddie blurts out. Shakes his head. Rectifies. “Not—you’re not stupid. Not at all. I just mean that… obviously, someone should want you for all of you.” Eddie thinks that should really go without saying. “But even without all the addendums. You’re, like, a total smokeshow, man.”
Good God. That’s fucking embarrassing. Even worse—or perhaps better, Eddie is so ruined—Buck beams.
"Total smokeshow?” Buck repeats, nothing short of delighted. On topic, Eddie really could go for a smoke bomb right about now. Just—pull the pin and flee.

Summary
Maybe he could be Derek....Because there’s this part of him that wishes Eddie would stay and fight, despite the danger, despite surely a concussion, probably a couple broken ribs or cut up arms. That he’d scream out Buck’s name, risk getting shot to find him, that he’d march Bonnie through the desert at gunpoint until she brought Eddie to him. ...
But leaving Buck has always been easy. Eddie’s well practiced at it, after all.
So when Bonnie comes back in, says, “we gotta get rid of that truck before he comes sniffing round again,” all Buck says is, “could you get me something for the pain? Maybe some antibiotics, too?” and when Bonnie beams at him, says, “that’s a great idea, Derek. Let’s get you back to your room,” he folds into her side, accepting the warmth of her love, because at least she’s someone willing to kill to keep him.

He was getting used to the idea when they crossed state lines into California around sunset—as he glanced over at his sleeping best friend and, despite all the cuts and bruises, despite the open-mouthed snoring, his only thought was about how beautiful Buck looked in the golden light—but sometime as they were passing by Joshua Tree he became so aware of all the thoughts he’d been repressing that he felt like he was going to vibrate out of his seat.
He’s sure now—that he’s not straight, that being gay is the main reason as to why all of his previous relationships came with an expiration date he willfully ignored, that it was so easy for complete strangers to pick up on a vibe between him and Buck because—

Summary
It’s a fucking miracle that Buck finds Chris after he falls off the truck and he nearly sobs with relief when the water finally recedes enough that he can plant his feet on solid ground. Buck holds Christopher tight with one arm, his free hand still clutched around the pole he’d held onto as the water had rushed around them, unable to let go just yet.

“Hey, Chris,” Buck says and rests a hand on his cheek, smiling as brightly as he can. “You have to keep going without me.”
“What?” he exclaims. “No!”
“Chris, listen to me-”
“No! I’m not leaving you!” As if to drive the point home he tips forward and holds onto Buck as tightly as he can.
