“Why are you here, Art?”
Art hesitates, but only for a beat, “Tashi kicked me out.”
“Why?”
“She, uh,” Art breaks eye contact again, “she said I needed to ‘face my desire,’ or something.”
“And you came here.”
Once, when Patrick was fifteen, his mother forced him to go to therapy for a summer. Patrick fucking hated it, and he definitely bullshit his way through most of his sessions, but if there was one thing he retained, it was this: people don’t learn if you just tell them what they need to know. They have to figure it out for themselves.
“And I came here…” Art repeats, like he’s solving a puzzle. And then, shocking Patrick and possibly even himself, he adds, “To you.”
“Uh huh,” Patrick says, low and gravely. His fingers twitch at his sides. “So,” he repeats, “what’s the plan, Donaldson?”

Or, the one where Art insists on leaving after his final match with Patrick, without Patrick, and Tashi is sick of their shit. Patrick knows later that night, when Art arrives unceremoniously at the threshold of his shitty hotel room, that this might be his only shot at the thing he's been thinking about for the better part of fifteen years. Art.

“What are these?” Yuna hears Ilya ask. He’s standing with his back to her in front of the armoire next to the couch, looking up at the shelves. She’d been on her way back into the living room with after-dinner coffee when she’d paused at the threshold.
Shane steps toward the armoire, coming up behind Ilya and curling both arms around his waist. “Um, trophies from when I was a kid. Like, minor hockey leagues and tournaments and stuff.”
Ilya moves his head from left to right slowly, scanning the array of trophies and medals on the shelf. “Is big business? Making meaningless awards for tiny hockey players?”
“They aren’t meaningless,” Shane protests, but he sounds a little sheepish.
“Yes, I’m sure the…” Ilya leans in close to read the plaque on one trophy, “‘Sportsmanship Award’ for the U7 Snowflake Classic was very prestigious.”
Shane rolls his eyes, but he’s laughing. “They don’t have awards like this in Russia?”
Or: Yuna bonds with Ilya, one plastic trophy at a time.
