Merlin scowled.
The warlock shot up from his bed and stalked out of his room, leaving the former king in his wake. He barely gave himself time to snatch his coat from the floor to warm up his freezing shoulders.
“Too soon? Merlin- look, I’m sorry, come back!”
Or: A week after Merlin buried his best friend and other half in Avalon, said best friend and other half that he buried in Avalon is suddenly trailing after him like a lost puppy. A dead lost puppy. That came back as a ghost. Merlin was going to scream.

Summary
On the night that Arthur learns of Merlin’s magic, a witchfinder is brought to Camelot. Fearing for his life and his chances of escape from the castle, Merlin turns to his last option. To travel through Nimueh’s Mirror, an indestructible artefact left behind when Nimueh fled Camelot at the start of the purge, said to have taken sorcerers away from the fear of the pyre, never to be seen again. On the other side, Merlin does not quite find the safe haven he was expecting.
He is back in Camelot.
But not his Camelot. An older Camelot, a harsher Camelot, with an older and harsher King to rule her. He cannot go back, he can only go on.
But how?
And what will his own Camelot do without him?

Both Merlin and the tiny bundle of fluff that he was holding gave him identical pleading looks, which Arthur told himself was not in the least endearing. “Arthur, come on,” Merlin wheedled, hugging the squirming puppy a little tighter against his chest. “Haven’t you always wanted a dog?”
OR: Merlin adopts a puppy. Arthur has absolutely no problems with this whatsoever.
