Much less looking like a wet puppy, drenched in the evening rain and with a bafflingly apologetic expression on his face, so much so that Gintoki has to blink twice to make sure it really is Takasugi and not someone else wearing his features for nefarious purposes or a shapeshifting Amanto or something equally ridiculous and plausible.
After so many years and all those wasted chances, Gintoki and Takasugi try to get started.

“You could do with a haircut yourself, your hair has gotten all gross.”
This is a bald-faced, absurd, criminal lie. It’s true that Takasugi’s hair looks extremely uncomfortable in this heat, much longer than usual and sticking in odd places from lack of care, and stuck to Takasugi’s sweaty skin. It looks uncomfortable and hot. Not hot as in weather hot, hot as in Gintoki wants to put a lock of that sweat-dampened hair in his mouth and chew on it for hours. Takasugi lets out these little annoyed grunts when hair gets stuck on his brow and he can’t brush it away on the first try and it is the cutest thing ever and Gintoki wants to lick his forehead. Gintoki’s imagination is very much into licking right now, with this heat and Takasugi’s skin all wet and shining like that, like it’s daring him to put his tongue against it.

He tries — and somewhat manages — not to snicker at his own words. He watches Takasugi’s jaw tense at them, and Gintoki braces himself for the inevitable retribution. The inevitable retribution is part of the fun.
But Takasugi just unclenches his jaw and says “Yes” with great effort, before going to sit down on the floor next to the futon.
Gintoki and Takasugi try something traditional.

“Are you going to let your hair grow out?” he asks, his fingertips brushing against the sensitive spot on his neck in a way that causes Takasugi to stop playing the shamisen entirely. “You’ll overlap with Zura in character points.”
Takasugi knows better than to ask what the hell Gintoki means by that.
“No, I just haven’t found the time to cut it,” he admits.
Gintoki moves his hand upwards, combing the hair, almost ruffling it as if he doesn’t want to leave one single lock untouched.
“It’s pretty,” he says, with one of his easy, boyish smiles.
Takasugi coffs at the expression on his face. “Oh, you’re already drunk.”

The problem is that Takasugi is wrinkling his nose at Gintoki, or more specifically at Gintoki’s mouth.
“What the hell is that taste?” he asks, running his tongue over his own lips. Gintoki knows he didn’t do it to be alluring and yet… “It’s that awful strawberry milk you keep drinking,” he realizes.
Gintoki rolls his eyes.
