Summary
"The Major's my father," Stebbins spits out the words at the wheels of the half-track rumbling on in front of them with what little energy is left in his body. The red rim of his eyelids glimmer as he looks up at the Major. "I'm his bastard."
Ray stares at him. The actual meaning of his words take some time to penetrate the coldness in his chest that's slowing all his thoughts, but when they do, he looks at the Major to see his reaction. When he sees that there is none, he looks back at Stebbins, and the awful, raw edges of his expression, and then back to the Major, hoping for Stebbins' sake, that the man at least fucking reacts. However, when he looks back at the Major, he is no longer there. Instead, a cavernous hole decides to open up beneath the half track with a roar not too dissimilar to that of the carbines, swallowing the entire vehicle whole.
A moment later, a great watery crash rings out from miles below them.

Summary
There’s a beat of silence. Just the cold and the wind.
“And when I die you’ll be all alone, right?”
“No.”
Stebbins doesn’t realize Garraty has been shaving off his pace until they’re side by side. He’s only in socks, limping a little bit. He looks at Stebbins, an expression on his face Stebbins can’t name— a shard of unfamiliarity, a shard of home. Intrigue and irritation, bound together by malice. Oh, Garraty, may we both stay the same.
“What do you mean, ‘no’?”
“We both know I’m going first.” Wind whips across the bridge, frigid like the water beneath them. Icy blue-black, an expanse like concrete, solid and unknowing of this fact. Stebbins’ fever is probably cooking his grey matter by now, frying his synapses beyond recovery.
“Do you think so?” Garraty watches him with eyes like coffee grounds on the table, like bark between tree leaves. “I don’t.”..
Stebbins realizes he really is going to die before the end of this.

Summary
Heaven wouldn’t hurt so bad, would it?
“Well, it was the words of the Major that kept me going. Something he said at the very beginning, about how we’ll never be number one again if we don’t try. So I tried to be number one. And here I am before y’all.”
Hell, then.

Summary
#47, Pete McVries, has a girl back home. It takes a while to get him to open up about it, he’s cagey about his home life, the tinfoil wrapped package of cookies in his pack, and the photograph he keeps folded into quarters and tucked into his shirt pocket. Almost everyone’s tried to get a peek at it over his shoulder at one point or another, and Olson even gets a warning for interference when he tries to snatch it from his hands.
“C’mon,” Olson whines. “Why don’t you want us to see her? She ugly or something?”
“Prettiest thing you’ve ever seen.” McVries is finally coaxed into saying. “Big brown eyes, red hair, soft all over.”

Summary
“I referenced that poem once. Two weeks ago.” Stebbins’ eyes are narrow, like he thinks there’s a joke being pulled on him. Pete wishes there was. It’d make this less awkward. Pete just ignores him, looking down at his more than battered shoes as avoidantly as possible.
But he can’t quite help himself, not when there’s a remark to be made. “Yeah, m’aware. Took me a damn long time to find’n all. You couldn’t just make it easy for me, could you?”
“Didn’t mean to make it hard, either. Didn’t mean to make it anything at all.” Stebbins retorts, though, no, maybe retorts is too harsh a word. It’s just a soft kind of comment, abject. Hurtful in a way that Pete can’t quite bring himself to understand, so he buries it. And while he does that, Stebbins quietly removes himself from the other boy’s bedroom, clicks the door shut, and disappears without a trace of him ever having been there in the first place."
OR: Pete doesn't know how to talk to Stebbins, but he figures it out as he goes along. Homoerotically.
