"Well, I suppose that's my cue to go. It was nice chatting with you, Annie," the unfamiliar man remarked. His departure broke their intimate moment as the two of them looked up to watch him walk away. Smoke grumbled, "Who was that guy, anyway?" Annie playfully teased, "Oh, don't tell me you're feeling jealous."
Annie clutched Smoke's arm as they gradually slipped into a side room.
"I'm not jealous; I just didn't like the way he was looking at you," he muttered, turning his gaze elsewhere.
She smiled, coy and a little sad, her gaze steady on his. "If only looks could kill," she said softly, as if to herself.

A bird took off loudly, and the burst of noise broke Smoke out of Annie’s spell and snapped him to attention. He scanned the grove to make sure they were still alone. His gun was on his hip like always. He suddenly noticed the sun’s position in the sky.
“Oh, shit!” he grunted and sat up, “Stack’s waiting for me.”
