Summary
After the destruction of Vulcan, many members of the endangered species are left without bondmates. To prevent any further unnecessary deaths, a program is set up to match volunteers with Vulcans entering pon farr alone.
It’s a simple contract: complete a mental compatibility exam, and when a Vulcan enters pon farr with a high enough compatibility score, you drop everything to spend a night on New Vulcan, then go your separate ways. There are definitely no weird ancient bonds in play that can get you accidentally-Vulcan-married to that person.

Jim pulls back the comm to look at the little screen. They’re still connected.
“Spock?” He asks. Nothing. Jim is about to snap the comm closed in frustration, when he hears a ragged inhale.
“You’re on a roof?” Spock’s voice is deadly soft, flat and hard and…something else that Jim’s brain won’t process. Jim rolls his eyes. He grabs another drink and wrestles it open, taking three large swigs before he bothers responding.

Enterprise is safe to fly another day. All thanks to Captain James T. Kirk's sacrifice. He's made peace with his death, even though it breaks his heart one final time to see the hurt in Spock's eyes. Still, the last thing he gets to see is the face of one of his dearest friends... until his eyes snap back open. Not in a hospital. In a shuttle as it lands at the Academy.
“Once you exit the shuttle you are free to return to your dorms. Those of you who are new, you’ll follow me to registration and physicals,” a vaguely familiar-looking officer says, and Jim’s heart stops in his chest. Surprising, considering it shouldn’t be beating at all.
