Keres woke gasping for breath around a high-pitched keen, curling in on herself as the memory of burning chased her into death.
“Easy there, cub,” said a voice above her, the deep, slightly-raspy voice almost familiar. “C’mon, up you get. No time to be layin’ around.”
She sucked in a deep breath, half-expecting it to burn her throat down into ruined lungs. When it didn’t, she blinked rapidly, pushing herself up to a sitting position. That didn’t hurt either, and she immediately pressed her hands to her chest, running them down over her stomach. She was whole. That didn’t seem right, but she couldn’t remember why.
“What,” she tried, but the words came out a rasping growl, like she’d never spoken before. She frowned, swallowed hard, and tried again. “What is this place? Why am I—”
“You’re dead, cub,” the voice said, and she turned blurry eyes on its owner.

Mike has kissed exactly one girl since El: Gracie Jenkins, at a party Stacey Albright threw a few weeks ago, before everyone went off to college. He hadn’t liked it, but he’d assumed that was more or less to be expected, that moving on from El would be easier said than done. He was making peace with the possibility that he might never move on, really—that any future romance was just doomed from the start.
Eric kisses him and, immediately, he likes it.
It takes one week of college for Mike to drunkenly make out with a boy at a party, and even less time for him to connect the rest of the dots.
