Fabian pauses to look up at Goldenhoard, stopped in time. The balloon arch behind them is maybe a little trite, but it’s also maybe a little sweet. He’s never been to a school dance before, homeschooled as he was on his father's ship, and a part of him wonders if this is supposed to be a shared experience every high schooler has.
“It’s too bad we aren’t here to actually enjoy prom,” Fabian says. “Didn’t even have the time to dance or anything.”
“Do you… want to dance?” Gorgug asks, hesitantly.
Near the end of freshman year, in the shadow of a dragon paused mid-battle thanks to some miraculous chronomancy, Fabian and Gorgug slow dance at prom.
It still takes the better part of a decade for them to start dating.

It’s more—visceral, in that way, the feelings of wrongness—because there’s layers to it, the alienation she feels from her body. On some level Tenko hates herself for feeling uncomfortable at all. And yet.
In a lot of ways, it’s easier on her to just keep her distance. She doesn’t totally want to. Himiko seems so much more keen on her company these days, almost desperate about it, calling Tenko by her given name and clinging to her every time she starts to shift away, as if she’ll disappear if Himiko looks at her too long or too hard. There’s no chance of that (Tenko would never turn her back on Himiko) but Tenko also can’t shake the feeling that Himiko wouldn’t want her to stay so badly if she hadn’t died in the first place, and that—rankles, admittedly.
But that’s also not the reason why Tenko wants to pull back. It just feels easier, that way. Simpler. And it makes it easier, on the occasions when they do see each other, fewer and further between after their stay at the rehabilitation facility ends, to meet Himiko’s eyes.

Tenko wakes up in a world she doesn't remember to a body she doesn't recognise. At some point, Maki joins her in working through the differences.
