Summary
Jean and Neil, then known as Nathaniel, had quite the unconventional upbringing: they had grown up in a cult compound in West Virginia belonging to a group called The Ravens. The Ravens followed a practice of teachings called Exy, that was part religion, part pseudo-science, and all around bad. To put it lightly, they did not have the best time growing up, but having each other around made their hellish lives a little more bearable. They said they’d be friends forever, but life and crime and cult things got in the way, as they always do, and they grew apart.
But now they were both free, living in the Real World, in the Same City even, and they weren’t on speaking terms. Neil wasn’t quite sure what he expected to happen when Jean finally got out of the Nest, but he’s sure it wasn’t this. It’d been almost two months since Jean had been allowed to live on his own, but things still weren’t quite right between them. It was to be expected, sure, but Neil still didn’t know how to feel about it.

They hadn’t explicitly talked about it before, but he was pretty positive that they were on the same page about keeping their relationship a secret, at least for a while. For one thing, the Olympics were coming soon and Ichirou was adamant that both Neil and Kevin needed to be on team USA. Neil was obviously planning on making it to the olympics anyway, playing on the US court was his ultimate goal. But while Andrew was a shoo-in for the team, as the best goalie in the league by a mile, Neil’s spot was far from secured. He had to earn his spot fair and square, and there couldn’t be any scandal about Neil’s place on the Court. To the public, Andrew and Neil were teammates who happened to work together very well thanks to their years playing together in school. And that’s the way it would stay, at least for a while.
or, Neil's finally on a Pro Exy team with Andrew, and he has a quiet morning, and debates how/if/when he and Andrew should go public about their relationship.

The problem was, Andrew didn’t know what he wanted. Wanting something was such a foreign concept to him. His whole childhood, he just wished he would disappear. The only thing he wanted was for his next foster home to not be as bad as his current one, and that never happened. When he finally found his family, all he really wanted was to keep them there with him at all costs. And if he was being really honest with himself, he had dug his claws in so deep that he had almost pushed them away entirely in the process.
He had wanted hookups, but only on his terms, and it was always just a means to an end. He wanted Neil. He wanted him so bad Andrew had thought it was a side effect of the drugs. But after Easthaven, Neil was still there and Andrew still wanted him. Getting to have Neil and his family should be enough, he never thought about wanting anything beyond that. But ever since their conversation on the roof, it was all Andrew could think about and it was driving him crazy.
or, Andrew thinks about Wanting and has a (very Mild) crisis about it.
