Summary

Harry is a twenty five year old editor who is thrilled to be assigned to such a literary icon. However, his excitement quickly fades away when he finally meets Louis, who turns out to be an absolute disaster… and a complete knobhead. “I want to see you again.” said Louis bluntly.
“What?” Harry blinked.
“Come on, Harold.” he said, leaning in. “You’re getting shy on me now? After last night?”
“I want to see you again too.” he scrunched up his nose. "So much."
“But?”
Harry took a deep shaky breath.
“I don’t want to be in a relationship, Louis.” blue eyes met green. “I really, really don’t.”
Louis just seemed to study him, still stroking the skin of Harry's shoulder absentmindedly.
“Can I be blunt with you, Harry?”
“Always.”
“First, it's fine by me because I have absolutely no interest in a relationship either.” at that, Harry perked up slightly and it made Louis smile softly. “But can I ask why you don’t? Because you seem pretty adamant about that. In a way I have not seen in a long time."
Harry swallowed dryly and looked down again.
“It’s complicated.”Or - Harry is a vet, Louis a soldier. They met one night at a bar and the connection is immediate. They've both been pretty hurt before though and don't want anything serious so they decide to keep things casual... because that always goes well, right?

Back at his desk, Louis closed his eyes for a moment, trying to settle into the reality of this. He was leaving the UK for only the second time in his life. Suddenly, the holiday he took to Spain three summers ago felt like it paled in comparison. He was going to the U.S. - for work, it was true, but still - alone. He’d been all for seizing the moment when his boss had been looking at him with a gaze of steel, but now he felt vaguely nauseous.
Louis took several shaky breaths, feeling like the air was being sucked from the room, and opened the manila folder, laying it flat on his desk. His breath caught as he saw the destination, centered in a large, block font at the very top of the first page:

Harry shrugged, his shoulders brushing against Louis’. “I think since I was young, I craved that feeling, though. I didn’t always hate being a prince, but over time, certain aspects of it just bothered me so much. I remember being four years old and realising that every person in the world knew my name, and I wasn’t sure if I wanted that. I told my mum as much and she tried telling me that being a prince is not a punishment. That it was a privilege that I should be happy about it, but no one asked me if I was. But looking up at the sky, I remember that all of this will one day mean nothing, and neither will I. All the pressure will then disappear and I could just be.”
Louis stayed quiet, allowing Harry the space to open up because he knew Harry wasn’t looking for advice, but just someone to confide in. What he wished he could tell him was that in the short amount of time that he’d known the prince, in Louis’ eyes, he couldn’t be insignificant if he tried. He was brighter than every star up there in the sky. He was all Louis could look at and think about.
