He buries his face in her lap, probably burning the soft, sensitive skin of her thigh with his five-o’-clock shadow. It's not enough. He needs to crawl inside her. Nap under a canopy of her ribs. He wraps his arm wholly around her. “Fucking love you,” he mumbles.
She plays with his hair in the early morning quiet. It's pensive, the way she scrapes her nails along his scalp.
“Why are you being like this?” she eventually asks.
“I'm always like this.” He's fucking nice. To her, anyway.

Samira hadn't entirely understood the juxtaposition of the glint in Dana's eye and the sadness in her tone when she'd informed Samira that Jack Abbot was on the roof.
"Getting some air," Dana had put it, like she was in on a sad joke Samira wasn't privy to.
So Samira climbed the stairs all the way to the top, pushing the door until it gave way to dark skies and warm August air, present even at the late–or perhaps early–hour. Her eyes found Abbot, standing past the guardrail a few yards away, on the ledge.
