Summary
Ilya's knee jerk reaction after the incredulity was to feel offended. I'm not a fucking charity case, he thought, even though he literally was. I can take care of myself, I always have, even though he had no idea how he was going to do so once he turned eighteen. And accepting help was humiliating; the financial aid forms alone might as well have been written in hieroglyphics, which confirmed Ilya's decision that college wasn't for him anyway.
Ilya was nothing if not self preserving though; he had to be to have made it this far. Plus, living with the Hollanders, even if it was for the last few months of his underage status, meant he could still play hockey a little while longer.
It was only when, after waving off David's offer of driving him home, but agreeing to freaking live with him, that a realization struck Ilya so suddenly that he actually paused in the middle of walking. He'd have to live with Shane too.
