Summary
Whenever Bucky fell ill in the past, he dealt with it. During the war, a soldier couldn't afford a sick day. He pushed through it. If it got bad enough, he could spend a day in the med bay surrounded by dying soldiers before he had to get his ass up again but no more than that.
As the Winter Soldier, it was unacceptable. They dosed him up with enough drugs so it dulled the pain and eased the lethargy. Anything to keep him on his feet. The brainwashing did the rest.
He's never been taken care of before. Not since he was a kid. That was the thought that ran through his swaying head as he listened to Sam Wilson humming while he made soup.

"Can you touch me?" Is what Bucky blurted.
"W—Come again?" Sam gawked, baffled. Obviously he hadn't expected such an upfront request. Bucky didn't blame him, because he could not have possibly worded that any worse. It definitely didn't help that it was one twenty seven in the damn morning, he was running on about thirty minutes of sleep, and he was standing on Sam's porch drenched in rainwater.
He felt so ridiculous.
It didn't help that Sam, despite being visibly bewildered, had a hint of amusement in his expression, while Bucky knew he 100% looked one twig snap away from dropping off of the face of the earth indefinitely.
Or: Bucky Barnes realized that he didn't exactly understand gentleness as much as he'd like to. An impulsive spurt of confidence happened to land him right on Sam's doorstep.
