And yes, the cords of his heart get twisted up in his chest sometimes. Sometimes, something sits fat and heavy, clogging the back of his throat, like it was trying to throttle him. Sometimes, the burn behind his eyes welled and shone, and he had to dig his teeth into the meat of his fist to stop himself from making a sound. But the only ones who ever saw were his rats, and he convinced himself that they huddle up close to him because they care, and not because there was a cold draft he hadn't been able to block up yet.
