He sucks in a breath, blinking at the hotel ceiling, and memory flashes back in jump cuts — chequered flag, radio screaming, “You’re world champion, mate!”, orange smoke, McLaren crew on the fence, his own voice cracking in parc fermé, while the tears stream down uncontrollably.
His face warms before his body has even caught up. God, he really did that on live TV, didn’t he? Like, repeatedly. They’re gonna meme him to death.
He shifts to roll onto his side and something moves next to him.
Warmth. Weight. The tug of the duvet.
