He hasn’t laughed like this around Connor in—God, Hudson doesn’t even know how long. It's not the polite chuckle he has to let out whenever Connor makes a joke so it won’t feel weird that he isn’t reacting, but the real thing. Real, genuine joy. It startles him how good it feels. How it pulls him back to Ottawa, those first few days before filming the first season when it was just them sharing a bed and sharing a life, bad coffee and long nature walks and friendship dates and figuring each other out without an audience, without stakes. Why'd he ever give that up?
The answer arrives almost as quickly as he asks when Connor reaches forward and brushes a stray piece of Hudson’s hair back from his forehead. Reason comes rushing back in. This is why.

He conjures his sun’s face: the soft curve of skin where the corner of his eye becomes the sweep of his cheekbone, the stubble that clings to the soft end of his chin, the strong and even line of his eyebrows. “Solnyshko,” Ilya says. “It means sun, yes, but… it’s like a pet name. Sunshine. Honey. I’m calling you my sun.”
This is mortifying in English. Christ, he should never have started this conversation. He should have shaken Shane off when he had the chance. Even as Ilya thinks this, he knows he could not have done it. He cannot deny Shanyshko anything. That has always been the problem between them. What a terrifying, awesome, horrible problem to have. Ilya would like to have this problem for the rest of his life.

Ilya blinks blearily up at him, starfished in the sheets. Beautiful and naked and missing his mother’s cross.

It wasn’t any worse than anything Hayden had said before. In fact, it was probably fairly tame as far as insults went, but it didn’t matter. Hayden could see the moment something inside of Shane detonated. One minute Shane was standing only a handful of feet away, his suit jacket clutched in his hands, and the next the jacket was dropped to the floor in a heap, and Shane’s hands were fisted in Hayden’s shirt, his back slamming against the wall.
Holy fuck, he thought. Shane is going to fucking hit me.
