"Have you talked to him today?" Jonathan asked, gesturing to Will, who was now approaching the sink. Mike didn't need Jonathan to explain who he was talking about.
"No, he's been in the basement all day. I thought he was just painting or something," Mike replied, shaking his head before lowering his voice. "I think he's having an episode."
Jonathan nodded. "I mean, maybe, but he hasn't had one in a long time," he said, voice growing softer.
Mike knew Will was still recovering from everything, still adjusting to being back home. Everything that had happened in the past couple of years certainly hadn't been great, but Mike thought things were getting better, or at least easier.
"I know," Mike whispered, looking back to Will, making sure he hadn't left the kitchen yet. Will was finishing up rinsing off his plate. Mike turned back to Jonathan. "What should we do?"
"I don't know. I mean, you were always the one that he wanted. You always knew how to talk to him and knew what he needed," Jonathan said, pausing before continuing. "Honestly, I think he would probably just want you."

“I'm sorry, I just… I feel like I'm going crazy.” Will tried to play it off with a chuckle but it was clearly forced and awkward. "All this stuff, me having powers now, the wall and how we can't get through it..”
“Hey,” Mike interrupted. "Crazy together, remember? I'm not letting you go crazy alone. Never alone." Mike's own cheeks warmed up. He couldn't believe this was happening. He felt so stupid. His thumb mapped Will's side of the face, feeling from his cheekbone to his jawline and looking in awe, wiping stray tears every once in a while.
“Crazy together." Will finally responded, leaning into Mike's touch.
Or: Mike deals with his feelings for Will and internalized homophobia.

Mike still had one more thing on his mind that’s been eating at him. It wasn’t that crazy of a question to ask. They had nothing better to do anyway. Also, they were friends and friends usually talked to their friends about these kinds of things, right? This could just be one friend asking another a simple question. Anyone would’ve done the same. To fill the silence, make the wait shorter. And he used to talk about El a lot, so it only made sense to give Will an opportunity to do the same.
"So who was it?" It came out in one frantic mess of a phrase that even Mike himself barely understood.
Will jumped a little, startled. "What?"
"Um, you said you had a crush on someone," Mike said, already failing spectacularly. "Who was it? Anyone I know?"

Will’s not supposed to be hiding in corners, forcing a fake smile when Mike asks him if he’s okay. He’s not supposed to brush off insults like they're jokes. He’s not supposed to vanish for six hours during a school day, leaving Mike feeling like he’s slipping away all over again.
Whoever said that beating Vecna’s going to fix Hawkins’ problems, Will’s problems, Mike’s problems—they deserve an earful. They deserve to feel this weird, hollow dissatisfaction chewing away at their chests.
aka mike begs will to escape their small town after too many run-ins with homophobic small-town bs. he knows will's meant to find himself elsewhere, but he never expects to find an answer to the age-old question of his own fate. prom, gay bars, sleazy hotels, train stations, two lesbians and their not-so-legal marriage - they aren't the traditional sources of wisdom, but he can't complain.
