Lando was late again, by exactly one minute.
Oscar glanced at his watch, then at him. “Late. We start tomorrow.”
That set Lando off immediately. He hissed under his breath, furious, but careful not to shout inside the library.
“By a fucking minute?!”
“Irresponsible,” Oscar said flatly, as if Lando’s outburst barely registered.
Or, Lando Norris, a fourth-year business management student and captain of the university’s soccer team, is one failure away from being benched, which could also jeopardize his graduation. Oscar Piastri, on the other hand, is a third-year medical student, top of his class, a certified nerd, and brilliant enough to tutor. A university scholar that tutors for the money.
Oscar is Lando’s tutor. Lando, used to getting away with everything, money, a stellar reputation, a name that opens doors, has never had to struggle to stay on top. Oscar despises people like him. He hates that someone can coast through life on charm and wealth while others, like him, have to work relentlessly for every scrap of success. Lando embodies everything Oscar loathes.

Lando Norris is in deep shit.

But just as things seem to start working out for him again, when an opportunity comes his way, a chance to play again, a stupid decision he had made a night before comes back to him and punches him in the face.

His eyes were a colour that Oscar had only ever seen during summer storms over the sea. Dark, greyish-green ocean waters that reflected the clouds when flashes of light split the sky. Oscar's mother would always chastise him for remaining on the beach to watch the tempests blow in, standing, staying, for far too long; she warned him of the looming danger, staring into something so unpredictable, so unknowable.

The sheer scale of her was disorienting; Oscar had imagined magnificence, but he had not imagined this—the sense that the ship was not built by men so much as by some colossal hand of fate. He had been on many ships before, but never on something like her.
