Astarion is not at his best when he enters the room Araj Oblodra is in. He's confused, he's overwhelmed, and everything STINKS. Being referred to as property, it's a lot easier, a lot safer, to just retreat into that safe space in his mind and BE, rather than fighting it.
He has always been property. He's just happy that this owner is treating him better than the last.
