“Last question,” Pierre said at last, “What’ll kill you out there?”
Benny bit back a sigh as he surveyed the scene below them: the rows of homes, the crushed cars, the dark shadows where bodies shift and curl. “Zombies?” he guessed, lifting a shoulder.
“Complacency,” Pierre said, gaze burning, “Complacency is what gets you killed.”
All this to say: Benny has no one to blame but himself when he jolts awake to a hand covering his mouth.

“Just promise me, don’t look behind you, okay?”
It all happened so fast. Obaya could barely register Bishop’s words over the roar of the now-freed monsters, the shouting of the other patrons of the carnival. Somewhere over her shoulder, the owlbear roared, and she heard a pained noise as Bishop’s warm body collided with her back. Her clothes became heavier as her warm, red blood mixed with a darker shade. She caught a flash of Bellamy’s wide eyes, a murmured word, and the wet gasp of Bishop stumbling back to consciousness.
Obaya didn’t think. The dinosaur turned to flee, choosing to lunge for its former captors rather than move closer to whatever lay behind her, and as she turned to survey the battlefield, a hand immediately coming up to offer support to the person behind her, she caught a glimpse of what Bishop had tried for so many months to keep from her.
After their trainwreck of a date, Obaya and Bishop enjoy a moment alone.

Urmius curls more tightly around himself, wrapping his arms around his torso, “I mean, I felt jealous. Truly jealous.” His breath stutters, “In the way a woman might.”
The words hang in the fog-thick room. Naeryx can hear the blood rushing in his ears, pulsing against his temples. Urmius turns at last, eyes fixed over Naeryx’s shoulder, and Naeryx’s gaze is transfixed by the way his teeth sink into his bottom lip.
When he speaks next, Naeryx must strain his ears to catch his words, so low is his voice. “Have you ever thought of kissing a man?”

John doesn’t understand, but he nods anyway. Another breeze blows through the air, and he shivers without meaning to. The ground is ice-cold against his bare feet. It’s fine, though--he’s used to it.
Suddenly there’s a warm weight on his head, and he reaches up to feel leather and rope. It’s a hat, worn and soft with age. He looks at Arthur, whose head is now uncovered.
“Keep it for the night, kid,” he says. There’s a faint smile on his face. “That little mop of hair ain’t gonna keep you warm.”

The little bird sitting on the top of Arthur’s grave tilts its head and peers at him, then flutters off in a burst of chirps. Charles draws in a lungful of smoke, holds it there for a long moment until it burns, and exhales. He sets the unfinished half of the cigarette at the base of the cross, the smoke spiralling skywards like a prayer, and runs a thumb over the fading knife cuts in the wood.
