Cpt 5:
“Right,” Rhodey sighs. “Of course. Why did I even think I had to ask? So someone tried to blow you up. While you happened to be in that building.”
Another shrug.
“And why were they trying to blow you up?”
“Well,” Sam says, “they started by trying to shoot him.” He thumbs at Barnes.
“Someone was shooting at you?” he asks, not sure why he’s so incredulous.
Barnes gives him a shrug to match Sam’s. Rhodes makes to pinch the bridge of his nose before he decides that might not be a great idea while he’s still got the suit on.
Chpt 7:
He doesn’t sulk and stomp away from the car after that. Mostly because Sam still hasn’t gotten that damn door fixed, so he has to wait for Sam to come around and let him out. Which Sam does. With a flourish. Because he’s an asshole.
“You’re an asshole,” Bucky says. Raynor told him it was important to verbalize these kinds of feelings.
Chpt 15:
Bucky meets his eyes. “Hi. Sam.”
That’s it. Hi. Sam. Not, what took you so long, not, nice of you to show up to the party, not, what did you stop for brunch while the rest of us were doing actual work. Just. Hi. Sam.
“Bucky?” he asks once more, a cold gnawing in his gut. He shoots a glance at Rhodey. “The hell happened?”
“Like I said,” Rhodes sighs. “They gassed the building. Nothing fatal. Just…”
“Just what?” Sam snaps. “Why would they…” Sam snags Bucky’s wrist, too hard. He forces his fingers looser when he realizes there’s no way he’ll be able to feel Bucky’s pulse through the thick leather of that stupid jacket. “Hey, Buck, what’s going on?”
Bucky looks guilelessly up at him, half his mouth twisted up in a grin, pupils blown wide, not a care in the world. Sam stares back for a moment, feeling all those cares Bucky doesn’t have written across his own face. He’s seen just about every expression on Bucky’s face. Anger, sure, all the time. Exasperation, even more often. Guilt, and sorrow, and heartbreak, more times than he cares for. But this? He’s never seen Bucky look like this.
“Oh,” he says, settling back on his heels. “You are high as a kite right now, huh bud?”

Chpt 24:
“Cheeseburgers.”
“What you want a malted milkshake with that, too?”
“Sure,” he replies amicably.
“Milkshakes.”
“Milkshakes. Great. Hey. Bucky?”
“Hmm?”
“I look like a damn pillow to you?”
He doesn’t. But whatever it is Bucky’s cheek is resting on—Sam’s shoulder, he guesses—it’s surprisingly comfortable. Not soft, exactly, but not terrible. Keeps shifting, but at least it’s warm. He might stay here for a while.
“Bucky.”
“Hmm?”
“Think you might be a little more comfortable in an actual bed?”
“Hmph,” he decides. He’s not cold anymore. Not even really hurt, or tired, or scared, or the dozen things he’s been for the past few months. Because here…well. “Here’s good.”
“Fine,” Sam sighs. “Here’s good.”

Part 1:
“I guess I’m supposed to care now,” Ava sighs. Her tone is indifferent, but her eyes are teasing. “Who is your boyfriend, Bucky? We are all dying to know who you're sharing ‘the love making times’ with…”
Bucky repeats that he does not have a boyfriend at the same time that John Walker answers, “Sam Wilson. The ‘real’ Captain America.”
Bob’s eyes open wide. “You’re dating Captain America?”
Alexei’s eyes are equally wide. “Sam Wilson?” he cries before giving Bucky a crushing hug. “Such a good catch! You must be eager for the love making times!”——————
“He probably wants some privacy while he stomps Bucky’s heart into the ground,” Ava quips before looking apologetic. “Sorry. Force of habit. Maybe it’s good. Maybe he wants… the love making times? Or maybe he wants to get married and do whatever normal people do after getting married. Have kids or adopt a dog… mow a lawn.”
Walker slaps both of his hands on Bucky’s shoulders and looks him in the eyes before saying, “Beg. Get on your knees and beg. Sign over all your money to him, sign any contract he puts in front of you, do whatever it takes to keep him from getting away. Fuck any kind of self-respect and keep that man in your life.”
Bob expresses concern that might not be a healthy suggestion, but Yelena and Ava are nodding in agreement with Walker.
“And remember to stimulate the prostate,” Alexei adds, just to ensure Bucky feels as uncomfortable as possible. “Do you know what prostate is?”——————-
“I can’t believe I forgot the gata! That was my favorite part,” Sam observes mournfully. “I remember thinking ‘Don’t lick your fingers in front of Bucky, he’ll lose respect for you if you act like a gluttonous little kid’. Then I did it anyway because that was some of the best dessert I have ever tasted.”
Bucky very much remembers Sam laughing and licking his fingers and threatening to lick Bucky’s fingers next. He thinks about that particular memory on a daily basis.—————
Bob: I am so relieved! I’ve been worried sick about you. I forgot how many feelings you have when you’re sober.

Part 2:
“Is Isaiah suddenly being nice because I’m about to get dumped?”
“Actually, Isaiah has decided you’re a good boyfriend for me because he thinks you’d take a bullet for me.”
Bucky’s whole body relaxes and he gives Sam one of those big, flirty smiles that make Sam feel like he’s falling in love all over again. “I would definitely take a bullet for you. I would happily jump in front of a hail of bullets for you. Hell, I’d take a bullet just to get your attention. Or to make you laugh. Or on a dare.”“I don’t want you to take a bullet for me,” Sam assures his partner. “But I like how quick you were to volunteer. I might just keep you around a little longer.”
Bucky smiles at that. This time it’s a small, sweet smile that makes Sam’s heart skip a beat. Bucky is so handsome when he’s being Bucky.
Sam pulls him in for a quick kiss on the lips before heading to the passenger side of the waiting car. Bucky stands frozen for a moment before stumbling towards the driver’s seat. Sam ignores Joaquin’s happy noises and Isaiah’s weary sigh and focuses on the former Winter Soldier looking gobsmacked by their first semi-public kiss. -
