Summary
Sam can’t recall the last time he saw his brother this banged up and still walking. Dean looks like a man who has just stumbled away from the twisted metal of a bad car wreck. He looks like he belongs in a hospital, and Sam grits his teeth in frustration that he can’t just go to him and drag him out of this god-forsaken barn and straight to an ICU. He has to wait. He has to wait and see whether this is actually his brother. Because while his first emotion was triumph upon seeing Dean - not Cain - stumble out of that hayloft as victor, he knows that feeling was premature. Sam believes in Dean like he believes that the sun will rise each morning; believes in him like he believes in the fundamental laws of nature. Dean is a force to be reckoned with, like gravity. He can be counted on, like the regularity of ocean tides. But he’s never faced anything like this.
