“People change as long as they live.” Ryoji sighs and Makoto feels the warm breath hit the back of his neck. “I think I’m afraid too. What if he’ll never hear me? What if I can only stay by his side and watch, like a lighthouse over the tides?”
Ryoji’s voice is so mournful. Makoto turns to him, slow and careful, scared to brush his face with the tip of his nose. Ryoji’s keen, patient eyes meet his own in the darkness.
“Is staying by his side not enough?”
Ryoji’s lips tighten. He shakes his head gently and says, voice straining with effort: “It is. But I wish he’d make that choice himself.”

Summary
The strange man in the scarf that Goro is constantly bumping into is an enigma. He doesn't seem smart enough to be faking his identity, he looks too human to be a monster in disguise, and although Goro can sense a terrifying underlying power whenever the man is around, no one will take Goro's concerns seriously...all because Mochizuki is "nice".
