“Hello?” the voice from her phone said, in Russian. It sounded familiar, somehow. Hesitant. “This is… Irina, yes?”
“Yes,” Irina frowned. “…Who is this?”
“Ah. It’s… Ilya,” her fucking uncle said. Her uncle, who she hadn’t spoken to since she was seven years old. “Ilya Rozanov,” as if that needed clarifying.
When the trust that Ilya set aside for his niece, Irina, becomes available to her at eighteen, Ilya speaks to her for the first time in twelve years. It changes a lot of things, for the both of them.

Summary
The Swiss National League doesn’t care about the legendary Hollander-Rozanov rivalry. When the MLH can’t negotiate with the Hockey Players’ Union in time to prevent a hockey lockout at the start of the 2015 season, the Zürich Lions jump at the chance to sign both Shane and Ilya to short-term contracts. For four months in Switzerland, they share a team, a line, a house, and a bed.
Then the lockout ends in January, and it’s time to go back. Back to different countries, cities, lives. Beds.
Reentry is harder than expected.

Shane lifts one eyelid again to look at Rozanov. His eyes are red-rimmed. Like he’s been crying. “Why…why aren’t you in Boston?”
Rozanov’s brow furrows. “Why would I be in Boston?”
“You, you’re captain. Raiders. Boston.”
The room is silent except for the beeping of monitors.
In 2023, Shane takes a bad hit on the ice. When he wakes up, the last thing he remembers is a tuna melt.
