"You've been... quiet," Casey said, her voice dropping an octave, losing its professional edge. "Ever since the Cabot case files were moved to the closed archives last week. If I'm overstepping, tell me to hit the bricks, but you look like you’re seeing ghosts, Olivia."
The air between them turned electric. Olivia felt the urge to lie, offer a practice "I'm fine." and turn back to her paperwork.
Casey nodded, "okay, call me if you need anything." She stood and patted the edge of the desk—a solid, grounding thud—and turned to walk towards the door. Olivia watched her go, the sway of her coat, the confident stride. It was a different walk, a different rhythm.
But as Casey turned the corner, the light hit the glass door of the squad room just right, reflecting a silhouette that, for one more cruel second, looked exactly like a ghost.
Or Olivia tries very hard to let Casey in.
