“I don’t want your family thinking there’s something going on between us,” she spits out, the words sharper than she intends, the irritation evident in her tone.
“Oh, and whyever would they think that?” Colin replies with mock incredulity, a roll of his eyes that only serves to sharpen her frustration.
The words rush out of her before she can stop them, too fast, too angry. “Because of how you’re acting!”
At this, Colin seems to straighten, his interest piqued, as if her acknowledgment of his behavior is some strange victory for him. “How am I acting?” he asks, a playful edge creeping into his voice.
“Like some lunatic who can’t take his eyes off me!” The words spill out faster now, a tide she can’t hold back. “Don’t think I haven’t noticed the looks you’ve been throwing at me. Teasing me, like it’s some game—like sitting across from you at dinner wasn’t torture enough!”
