It's a deep, instinctual thing, a kind of post-event defence mechanism. If Pete can just hide the bruise, shield any sign of weakness or injury, then he's built up his defences again. Then no one will ever know how weak and pathetic and vulnerable and utterly embarrassing he is, with his bruises and cuts and gashes and scrapes and burns.
