    It was easy to tell when Wei Ying wanted something. Despite being a tall, slender fifteen-year-old who had recently topped the rankings of the most popular gongzi, he still acted like a child begging for a toy.

    "Gra-n-d-pa!"

    Wen RuoHan raised an eyebrow. Wei Ying had approached him while he was instructing Wen Xu on administrative matters. “What do you want?” he asked bluntly. Though his tone was dry, it wasn’t hostile. In fact, he seemed amused. He probably enjoyed indulging his grandson more than anyone could imagine.

    Wei Ying smiled and pulled out letters bearing the Lan seal—the same invitations that had arrived at the Sun Palace every year for over a decade, only to be fed to the goats.

    The year of studies at Cloud Recesses is coming. Wen Xu is skeptical. Wen RuoHan is disgusted. Wei Ying has his own methods of persuasion.

    “Oh! Lan Zhan! What a surprise to see you here.”

    Wei Ying slipped his backpack from his shoulders and slid into the seat across from him with a smile, leaning forward and resting his cheek on his palm in what he knew to be a cute gesture. Most alphas became wide-eyed and stupid when he did things like this.

    But Lan Zhan looked at him with serene intensity, like a pool of undisturbed water. Like the vastness of space.

    “Wei Ying.”

    Wei Ying didn’t know how he’d ended up here.

     

    The omega was heaving in sharp gasps, shock temporarily rendering him mute — truly a feat in and of itself; a perfect representation of how utterly surprising his situation was. He was being held down easily. Firmly restrained as if he wasn’t one of the top four strongest cultivators in their generation, no matter how hard he shoved against the grip on himself his oppressor wasn’t budging at all. Leaving him staring up in a mixture of nervousness, excitement (mostly shock) and fine maybe — he could admit privately to himself — a little bit of fear at the positively enraged alpha that was restraining him.

     

    He didn’t quite know how this happened.

    Wei Ying is simply too beautiful, both in body and in soul, for Lan Zhan to let go of. He knows this feeling, and has recognized it in his own father, and despite vowing that he’d never be what his father once was, Lan Zhan finds that it does not matter in the face of these new feelings.

    Lan Wangji wants the omega, and he will do anything to get him.

    Or, Lan Wangji meets the pretty little omega Wei Ying and cannot get enough of him. So he coerces the Jiangs for his hand.
