Here was the setup, because every good joke needed a setup: in 1958, Richie was an up-and-coming comedian, trying to find his way to someone else's dressing room when Eddie's hypnotic pull yanked him out of orbit. Not that Eddie was really doing anything, at the time. Eddie, standing out of the way with a newspaper and leather portfolio tucked beneath his arm, was just too put-together: so spit-shined and neat that Richie knew even from a passing glance that the guy was not a comic. Even the married comics didn't look that straitlaced.
Richie, four glasses deep in gin at the time, stopped short in front of the handsome stranger and said, "You married?"
